SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] America 250 Speakers Series: Equestrian Sport in Harford
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out and at capacity\, tickets will not be sold at the door. \nJoin us at the Harford History Center for a talk and book signing featuring Josh Pons\, a third-generation horseman and owner of Country Life Farm\, as he relates the stories behind his newest book\, Letters from Country Life: Adolphe Pons\, Man o’ War\, and the Founding of Maryland’s Oldest Thoroughbred Farm. \nIn 2016\, in the basement of his farmhouse\, Josh Pons discovered thousands of letters from his grandfather’s life in the Thoroughbred horse business. The son of a French cook who came to New York City in 1894\, Adolphe Pons got his start working in the Fifth Avenue mansion of Gilded Age banker August Belmont II. Adolphe became his personal secretary and later played a major role in Belmont’s breeding and sale of the most famous horse in history: Man o’ War. During the Great Depression\, Adolphe left New York and bought a 100-acre horse farm in Maryland\, naming it Country Life after the Long Island Railroad station stop nearest his Garden City home. \nIn serial form\, Josh Pons expands on the column he wrote for the leading horse publication The BloodHorse\, inviting readers to once more step into the attic garret alongside him as he recovers long-lost voices speaking out of letters\, telegrams\, and photos. Upon the attic stage appear Gilded Age tycoons from whom the author’s grandfather bought and sold horses against the backdrop of World War I\, the Great Depression\, and World War II. As Josh draws from the farmhouse’s rich archive\, he chronicles his grandfather’s life and times and shares his own candid reflections. The result is a fascinating and fresh look at the Golden Age of Horse Racing and how the past influences our present. \nThis is a unique opportunity to explore Harford County’s connection to horse breeding\, Maryland’s role in the sport of horse racing\, and the Pons family’s legacy in Maryland’s equestrian history. \nWine will be available at this event. \nTicket Prices: $25 ($15 for HSHC Members) \nThis event is sold out and at capacity\, tickets will not be sold at the door.

SUMMARY:The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford - Guest Speaker Walter Holloway
DESCRIPTION:The Ma & Pa Railroad stretched between Baltimore at North Avenue & Howard Streets\, on to Towson\, and through Long Green Valley into Harford County. It ended at Market Street in York\, Pennsylvania. Even by the day’s standards\, it passed through some of the East Coast’s most wooded\, curvaceous\, and beautiful scenery. \nThe Ma & Pa Railroad was an important part of life in Harford County\, especially for the towns between Baltimore and York. The early morning run from Harford County to Baltimore City carried so much milk that locals called it “The Milky Way.” For the owners of the County’s many canneries\, quarries\, and mines\, the railroad was an essential part of their livelihood. The trains chugged through 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of only 15–20 miles per hour because of the route’s many grade changes and curves. At the turn of the twentieth century\, the railroad trip from Baltimore City to Sharon (north of Forest Hill) took about 1 ¾ hours. \nIn addition to mail and a wide range of Harford County products\, the Ma & Pa also carried people—travelers\, shoppers\, theatergoers\, and relatives. They welcomed the screeching whistles and billowing steam clouds of the Ma & Pa Railroad as a way to see what lay beyond their hometowns. Like other railroads of the time\, the Ma & Pa began a slow decline as buses\, trucks\, and Model Ts carried people and products between Baltimore and Bel Air on Rt. 1. \nJoin Ma & Pa expert Walt Holloway as he shares his photographs and stories of the heyday of the Ma & Pa. Registration is available at www.harfordhistory.org. The fee is $15. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:400 Years of History: Joppa Exhibit Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society is excited to announce the opening of a unique exhibit at the Society’s museum\, celebrating 400 years of life in Joppa. The land now known as Joppa provided an ideal location for Native Americans to hunt\, fish\, and cultivate crops. These same qualities brought colonists to the area. In 1661\, John Taylor received a 300-acre land grant from King Charles II. This land later became the town of Joppa. Tradition holds that the name derives from the biblical Jaffa\, meaning “beautiful.” \nOver time\, Joppa served as the county seat of Baltimore\, a major shipyard\, a horse racing mecca\, the home of British spies during the American Revolution\, farms worked by Prisoners of War during World War II\, the present-day residential community of Joppatowne\, and so much more. \nJoin us to view artifacts tracing Joppa’s history and learn about the incredible stories behind this beautiful waterfront community and its role in county history. \nThis is a free event. Donations are appreciated. Parking is available at the rear of the building off Gordon Street. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Living History Lunch & Show: Sarah Grimke Speaks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this year’s Annual Meeting on Sunday\, September 21\, 2025\, at 2 pm. This very special program will feature a delicious lunch provided by one of Harford’s most noted caterers\, an opportunity to browse the ever-expanding museum collection\, and the chance to experience a unique living history performance by historical interpreter Christine Potts as she transports us to the world of Sarah Grimke\, noted abolitionist and suffragist. \nSarah Grimke Speaks! \nWhen 26-year-old Sarah Moore Grimke boarded a ship from Charleston to Philadelphia in 1819 to accompany her ailing father north\, she embarked on a history-making journey that took her from failed Southern belle to pioneering abolitionist and women’s rights activist. \nBorn into the Southern gentry\, Sarah’s abhorrence of slavery and devotion to God led her to convert to Quakerism and settle in Philadelphia\, where her charismatic and irrepressible younger sister Angelina Emily Grimke later joined her. After tumultuous years within the Society of Friends\, Sarah then followed Angelina north to New York\, where the two rose to public prominence and national notoriety by doing the largely unprecedented: daring to speak their minds. \nIn a time when no “respectable woman” would utter a word of public discourse\, the Grimke sisters became among the first women in America to conduct a lecture tour. What began as ladies’ gatherings in private parlors soon grew to packed audiences of men and women held spellbound by the sisters’ calls for immediate abolition of the enslaved and then\, perhaps even more controversially\, equal rights for women. \nIn this 50-minute program\, Chris Potts tells Sarah’s story in Sarah’s voice\, immersing the listener in a compelling vocal performance. With a background in teaching\, writing\, and performative storytelling\, Chris first developed the idea to research the life and interpret the story of Sarah Grimke after leading a discussion on Sue Monk Kidd’s The Invention of Wings in 2019 at the Historical Society of Harford County\, where she now serves as Executive Director. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford - Guest Speaker Walter Holloway
DESCRIPTION:The MA & PA Railroad stretched between Baltimore at North Avenue & Howard Streets\, onto Towson\, through Long Green Valley into Harford County. The trains chugged through 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of only 15 – 20 miles per hour because of the route’s many grade changes and curves. At the turn of the twentieth century\, the railroad trip from Baltimore City to Sharon (north of Forest Hill) took about 1 ¾ hours. \nIn addition to mail and all kinds of Harford County products\, the MA & PA also carried people—travelers\, shoppers\, theatergoers\, and relatives. They welcomed the screeching whistles and billowing steam clouds of the MA & PA Railroad as a way to see what lay beyond their hometowns. Like other railroads of the time\, the MA & PA began a slow decline as buses\, trucks\, and Model Ts began to carry people and products between Baltimore and Bel Air on Rt. 1. \nJoin Ma & Pa expert Walt Holloway as he shares his photographs and stories of the heyday of the Ma & Pa.  The fee is $15. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Annual Dinner and Show\, featuring Alisa Dupuy as Adrienne de Lafayette
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society’s 2024 Annual Dinner promises to be a grand occasion. This year’s dinner will be held at the Historical Society’s Headquarters\, 143 N. Main Street in Bel Air. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the tremendous progress at the Society’s Museum\, learn about upcoming Society projects and programs\, enjoy a fine dining experience with a catered dinner and celebrate the 200th Anniversary of General Lafayette’s return to America. \nIn 1824\, Lafayette\, the American Revolution’s last surviving general\, returned for a Farewell Tour of the country he helped create. He toured the 24 states that made up the country at the time. His journey will be recreated over the next year and a half with programs in the cities he visited in 1824-1825. Harford County was one of Lafayette’s final stops on his tour before returning to France. This visit will be commemorated in Havre de Grace in July 2025\, but local exhibits and events are planned throughout the next year. \nThe Historical Society is planning a special program for this Year’s annual dinner which will begin with a celebration of Lafayette’s birthday – dinner will include birthday cake\, followed by a presentation by reenactor\, Alisa Dupuy as Adrienne de Lafayette\, wife of General Lafayette\, hero of the American Revolution\, without whom we could not have won our independence. Come honor this great Founding Father and learn about the amazing woman behind the man. \n\nHSHC Member Tickets – $45 / person\nGuest Tickets – $75 / person\n\nPurchase Tickets Here
