SUMMARY:Harford Civil Rights Project with Dr. James Karmel
DESCRIPTION:Faculty and students at Harford Community College have worked on several civil rights projects since 2019. These included more than 500 students working on civil rights related projects in drama\, English and history courses. Several of these courses looked at the civil rights struggle of the 50s and 60s and the impacts of segregation in Harford County over the decades. As a part of these efforts\, a series of oral histories have been recorded and developed into a website/app. Dr. Karmel\, a leader in this effort\, is quoted as saying\, “To the extent that the project can help enact positive change where necessary in Harford\, we’d like to pursue that\, mainly through providing forums for people to communicate.” \nThe upcoming program will include featured segments of the app and an opportunity to speak with Dr. Karmel about the Civil Rights movement in Harford County and its impacts which continue to this day. \nRegister Now! $10

SUMMARY:The Archeology of the Bush Tavern & Surrounding Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, archeologists with the State Highway Administration initiated an archeological dig at the Bush Tavern on Route 7 in Abingdon. During the Revolutionary War\, the tavern was part of the settlement known as Harford Town\, the county seat from 1774 to 1791. French troops under Rochambeau camped nearby during the War. The Bush Declaration was signed here by several county residents at “the risqué of our lives and our fortunes”. Aaron Levinthal\, a state archeologist\, and lab director involved with the dig noted\, “A slew of artifacts ‘that are related to every aspect of daily life\,’ has been found. They include food remains\, such as animal bones\, tableware\, cookware\, construction items\, wine bottles\, thimbles\, buttons\, pieces of tobacco pipes\, pieces of pens\, even slate pencils.” In his presentation\, Levinthal will share his findings and that of others involved in this exploration of Harford’s historic past.

SUMMARY:Annual Genealogy Conference: Finding the Story
DESCRIPTION:This year has seen the return of the genealogy program “Who Do You Think You Are” (WDYTYA) which has touted the art of genealogy and the wonderful stories it can reveal. The show is sponsored by Ancestry.com but a lot of the seekers are sent to repositories to find out more information. In truth\, there is only so much you can find online\, even though more information is being added every day. To find answers you have to go to the repositories to find local records\, court records\, and other evidence. On October 15th\, join us at the Historical Society of Harford County to review the WDYTYA methods and find the resources available to you. Discussions will include societies such as the Daughters’ of the American Revolution (DAR)\, National Archives\, State Archives\, and other resources. \nTime for research of our archives will be provided in the afternoon. The program will also include a genealogy book sale\, offering an opportunity to find specialized resources for your future research. \nRegister Now: $20\, pre-registration is required. \nThe classes start at 10:00 AM and concludes at 12:00 with a lunch (On Your Own) break. At 1:00 PM we will have research time until 3:00 PM for those registered for the class.
