SUMMARY:Harford Civil Rights Project with Dr. James Karmel
DESCRIPTION:Faculty and students at Harford Community College have worked on several civil rights projects since 2019. These included more than 500 students working on civil rights related projects in drama\, English and history courses. Several of these courses looked at the civil rights struggle of the 50s and 60s and the impacts of segregation in Harford County over the decades. As a part of these efforts\, a series of oral histories have been recorded and developed into a website/app. Dr. Karmel\, a leader in this effort\, is quoted as saying\, “To the extent that the project can help enact positive change where necessary in Harford\, we’d like to pursue that\, mainly through providing forums for people to communicate.”  \nThe upcoming program will include featured segments of the app and an opportunity to speak with Dr. Karmel about the Civil Rights movement in Harford County and its impacts which continue to this day. \nRegister Now! $10

SUMMARY:The Washington Rochambeau Revolutionary War Trail
DESCRIPTION:The September Brown Bag Lunch program will feature author and scholar\, Dr. Iris De Rode who will share the fascinating story of the Washington Rochambeau Revolutionary War Trail. This 680-mile trail between New Hampshire and Virginia tells the story of the beginning days of our Republic. Dr. De Rode will share a very unique perspective on Harford County’s portion of the trail. While working on her Ph.D. in France she met some descendants of Francois Jean de Beauvoir Chevalier de Chastellux\, principal liaison officer\, member of Academie Francoise\, third in command of French forces at Yorktown during the American Revolution\, and personal friend of President George Washington. Acting as Adjutant General to Rochambeau\, Chastellux accompanied him on his journey through Harford County on the way to the Battle of Yorktown\, keeping a journal along the way. Dr. De Rode gained access to this journal while researching Chastellux’s papers at the home of his descendants. Her talk will include details from these journals as well as the story of the Washington Rochambeau Trail which will soon be part of the national trail system transversing through Harford.

SUMMARY:Harford History in Textiles: The Norrisville Quilt and More
DESCRIPTION:The Textile Department of the Harford County Historical Society holds over two thousand items in its collection\, including hats\, gloves\, military uniforms and an array of men’s\, women’s and children’s clothing that combined help tell the story of daily life in Harford County through the years. One gem of the collection is a quilt made in 1976 by a group of Norrisville homemakers who were determined to chronicle the historic places in their beloved community for the education and enjoyment of future generations. \nOn Tuesday\, July 12\, 2022\, Executive Director\, Chris Potts will share the story of the “Norrisville Quilt” as told by Judith Billingslea\, one of the quilt’s creators\, and introduce viewers of the virtual Brown Bag Lunch program to the many textile treasures that the Society houses and preserves.

SUMMARY:The Environmental Movement in Harford County
DESCRIPTION:In 1972\, Bob Chance founded the Susquehannock Environmental Center\, a recycling facility that operated for more than 30 years. The Center was the nation’s oldest continually operating recycling center\, surviving fire\, unfavorable political climates and more\, before closing in 2004. Chance served as a beloved teacher at Bel Air High School and C. Milton Wright High School\, chairman of the Environmental Task Force of Harford County\, Executive Director and trails manager for the Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway\, performer as Ranger Bob on the Romper Room Television program\, site manager of the Otter Point estuary and much more. \nOn Tuesday\, June 14th at 12:30 pm\, Chance will share his experiences and provide a look back at Harford County’s evolution in environmental education\, reclamation initiatives\, political strategy and the accomplishments leading to today’s successful conservation efforts along with the perils we now face. The in-person program will be held at the Anita Leight Estuary Center\, 700 Otter Point Rd.\, Abingdon\, MD 21009. \nThis is a rare opportunity to see first-hand the beauty of the nature center\, learn more about environmental issues that impact our everyday lives from a person who has dedicated his life to this cause and for Bob Chance’s many students\, readers and friends to gather and rekindle some very special friendships. DESCRIPTION:Amy Rosenkrans is a noted expert on the Women’s Suffrage movement in Harford County.\nRosenkrans is a lifelong resident of Havre de Grace and has served as an educator in Prince George’s County\, Baltimore City and at Havre de Grace High School. In 2021\, she was elected to the Board of Directors of the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center as she was recognized for her passionate advocacy for ensuring Maryland women and girls become part of our nation’s history. \nMs. Rosenkrans is a memorable storyteller who loves to share her discoveries with her audiences. On Saturday\, June 11th at 2 pm at the Little Falls Friend’s Meeting House\, 719 Old Fallston Rd.\, Fallston\, MD 21047\, she will share the stories of the brave women in Harford County who fought for the right to vote and describe how this movement led to the county’s first League of Women Voters chapter.
