SUMMARY:Bush Declaration Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:March 22\, 2025\, is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Bush Declaration. On this day in 1775\, a body of men gathered in the town of Bush in a building that served as a temporary jail and courthouse for the newly created Harford County. Thirty-four of these men signed a document known as the Bush Declaration\, declaring the county’s support of the 2nd Continental Congress and Provincial Convention of Maryland. These men risked their lives and fortunes to stand against Great Britain as the country dissolved into war. \nThe Anniversary celebration will include a presentation by Colonel Aquila Hall\, Chairman of the Committee of Harford County and the first person to sign the Bush Declaration\, followed by a reading of the Declaration and accompanying musical selections. This is a free event. Children and the young at heart can pick up a Passport that they can have stamped at selected historical sites on Saturday and Sunday. Participants can redeem their passports at the day’s last stop or the Hays House on Sunday for a certificate and a Junior Historian badge.

SUMMARY:The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford - Guest Speaker Walter Holloway
DESCRIPTION:The MA & PA Railroad stretched between Baltimore at North Avenue & Howard Streets\, onto Towson\, through Long Green Valley into Harford County. It ended at Market Street in York\, Pennsylvania. Even by the day’s standards\, it passed through some of the East Coast’s most wooded\, curvaceous\, and beautiful scenery. \nThe MA & PA Railroad was an important part of life in Harford County\, especially for the towns between Baltimore and York. The early morning run from Harford County to Baltimore City carried so much milk that locals called it “The Milky Way.” For the owners of the County’s many canneries\, quarries\, and mines\, the railroad was an essential part of their livelihood. The trains chugged through 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of only 15 – 20 miles per hour because of the route’s many grade changes and curves. At the turn of the twentieth century\, the railroad trip from Baltimore City to Sharon (north of Forest Hill) took about 1 ¾ hours. \nIn addition to mail and all kinds of Harford County products\, the MA & PA also carried people—travelers\, shoppers\, theatergoers\, and relatives. They welcomed the screeching whistles and billowing steam clouds of the MA & PA Railroad as a way to see what lay beyond their hometowns. Like other railroads of the time\, the MA & PA began a slow decline as buses\, trucks\, and Model Ts began to carry people and products between Baltimore and Bel Air on Rt. 1. \nJoin Ma & Pa expert Walt Holloway as he shares his photographs and stories of the heyday of the Ma & Pa.  The fee is $15. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Icy Winters on the Chesapeake – a Virtual Presentation by Author James Foster
DESCRIPTION:Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay’s myriad inlets in summer\, it is hard to imagine that\, come January\, icebreakers may be plowing the waters you cruised in July. When portions of the Great Shellfish Bay iced up\, the flow of commerce was seriously impeded. At the turn of the nineteenth century\, with the center of the new nation’s government establishing its arms\, a frozen Bay meant that the United States’ emergence to a status on par with the world’s foremost nations might be painfully slow. James Foster’s book\, Icy Winters on the Chesapeake\, chronicles the disasters and pitfalls\, large and small\, that come with the coldest of winters. \nLearn more about the harrowing history of the Chesapeake Bay and winter’s impact on our shores at this virtual presentation at 12:30 pm on January 21st. \nAn email containing the event link will be sent in advance of the start time. \nRegistration is now closed.

SUMMARY:Lafayette in Harford County Reprised
DESCRIPTION:In 1931\, J. Alexis Shriver wrote a book entitled Lafayette in Harford County that recounted the Marquis de Lafayette’s travels through Harford County\, Maryland during the Revolution and his stop in Havre de Grace on his Farewell Tour. Today\, local historical researchers dispute some of Shriver’s claims. Learn more about these visits and explore the facts and the myths associated with Lafayette’s Harford Connection. Historian Dr. Amy Rosenkrans will share what she has learned through her research on Lafayette in Harford. Shriver’s book\, Lafayette in Harford County\, 1781…is available at the Harford County Public Library. Both the Bel Air and Havre de Grace branches have copies.

SUMMARY:Annual Dinner and Show\, featuring Alisa Dupuy as Adrienne de Lafayette
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society’s 2024 Annual Dinner promises to be a grand occasion. This year’s dinner will be held at the Historical Society’s Headquarters\, 143 N. Main Street in Bel Air. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the tremendous progress at the Society’s Museum\, learn about upcoming Society projects and programs\, enjoy a fine dining experience with a catered dinner and celebrate the 200th Anniversary of General Lafayette’s return to America. \nIn 1824\, Lafayette\, the American Revolution’s last surviving general\, returned for a Farewell Tour of the country he helped create. He toured the 24 states that made up the country at the time. His journey will be recreated over the next year and a half with programs in the cities he visited in 1824-1825. Harford County was one of Lafayette’s final stops on his tour before returning to France. This visit will be commemorated in Havre de Grace in July 2025\, but local exhibits and events are planned throughout the next year. \nThe Historical Society is planning a special program for this Year’s annual dinner which will begin with a celebration of Lafayette’s birthday – dinner will include birthday cake\, followed by a presentation by reenactor\, Alisa Dupuy as Adrienne de Lafayette\, wife of General Lafayette\, hero of the American Revolution\, without whom we could not have won our independence. She will tell the story of their life together\, his achievements and explain why he is considered the Hero of Two Worlds. Lafayette’s visit did much to keep America strong in a political environment that could have torn the country apart. Come honor this great Founding Father and learn about the amazing woman behind the man. \n\nHSHC Member Tickets – $45 / person\nGuest Tickets – $75 / person\n\nPurchase Tickets Here
