SUMMARY:Abraham Lincoln & the United Stated Colored Troops
DESCRIPTION:Calling all history buffs\, especially those who love delving into the Civil War. You will not want to miss joining the Sgt. Alfred B. Hilton Memorial Fund Committee for their Ninth Annual Memorial Fundraiser. Join us for this free event on Saturday\, June 7\, 2025\, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Historical Society of Harford County Headquarters building on Main Street. Featured speakers include The Honorable William R. Martin\, Mayor of Havre de Grace\, Mr. Duke Thompson\, Abraham Lincoln Reenactor\, and Mr. Michael Woods\, Civil War Historian. Delve into the precipitating factors for the war and look at where Harford County citizens stood regarding the war. Glance into President Abraham Lincoln’s mindset surrounding the use of Black soldiers and explore how Union General Benjamin Butler planned to utilize these new recruits in the war effort. \nThis annual event raises funds to support the Committee’s efforts to fund yearly scholarships (administered through Harford Community College) for four deserving students. It helps fund the other programs of the Sgt. Hilton Committee in reaching their mission of Preserving Sgt. Hilton’s memory\, establishing a memorial in his honor\, educating the public about Harford County’s only native Medal of Honor recipient and highlighting the impact of the nearly 185\,000 United States Colored Troops who valiantly fought for the Union during the war. Learn not only about Sgt. Hilton and his family connections here in Harford County\, but how you can help in our efforts to locate and appropriately identify the final resting places of USCT soldiers buried throughout Harford County. Donations are welcomed\, and sponsorships are highly encouraged. We hope to see you at this wonderful event. Be sure to mark your calendars and preregister now on the HSHC website to join us for this exciting afternoon of learning. Seating is limited and must be reserved. \nVisit the Sgt. Hilton website to donate or become a sponsor at https://www.sgtalfredbhiltonfoundation.com/donations/.

SUMMARY:The Last Raid\, Author Event & Book Signing with Tom Guercio and Diana Guercio Prentice
DESCRIPTION:Step back to the Bel Air of the 1930s and 1940s with authors Thomas Guercio and Diana Guercio Prentice. Learn about the days of the Bel Air Race Track\, the “Graw\,” boxing at the Armory\, poker at the Argonne\, and gambling at “The Hole.” These good old days included bookmaking\, moonshine\, and so much more. \nGuercio’s story is told through the reminiscences of George Van Bibber\, a friend of the authors’ father. Sam Guercio\, an Italian immigrant\, settled in Bel Air in 1932. Several of his family members were already residents and local business owners. If you are of a certain age\, you may remember visiting Sam’s Barbershop\, the family’s Shoe Repair shop on Burns Alley\, Guercio’s Grocery Store\, or perhaps Sam & Gorrell’s bookmaking parlor in Fallston. This promises to be a fascinating story. The event is free. Registration is encouraged. Books will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Land Surveying in Harford and Beyond\, Presentation by James Boggs
DESCRIPTION:Join James Boggs\, PhD. as he introduces his audience to the intricacies and history of land surveying. Dr. Boggs will share his collection of historic surveying equipment and stories of working with Rector William Smith at St. Mary’s Church in Emmorton\, surveying the church cemetery for his good friend while stationed at APG\, along with many other stories about the impacts of land surveys on our daily lives.   This is a unique opportunity to learn how these lines are drawn and actually have a hands-on experience with some of this fascinating equipment. Dr. Boggs will be joined by Claudine Adams to tell the story of the Society’s Deaton Collection. Glen Deaton was the county surveyor from 1951 until 1970s. This collection provides a graphic image of Harford County moving from a rural enclave to the beginning of suburban expansion.

SUMMARY:Bush Declaration Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:March 22\, 2025\, is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Bush Declaration. On this day in 1775\, a body of men gathered in the town of Bush in a building that served as a temporary jail and courthouse for the newly created Harford County. These men risked their lives and fortunes to stand against Great Britain as the country dissolved into war. \nThe Anniversary celebration will include a presentation by Colonel Aquila Hall\, Chairman of the Committee of Harford County and the first person to sign the Bush Declaration\, followed by a reading of the Declaration and accompanying musical selections. This is a free event. Children and the young at heart can pick up a Passport that they can have stamped at selected historical sites on Saturday and Sunday. Participants can redeem their passports at the day’s last stop or the Hays House on Sunday for a certificate and a Junior Historian badge.

SUMMARY:The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford - Guest Speaker Walter Holloway
DESCRIPTION:The MA & PA Railroad stretched between Baltimore at North Avenue & Howard Streets\, onto Towson\, through Long Green Valley into Harford County. It ended at Market Street in York\, Pennsylvania. Even by the day’s standards\, it passed through some of the East Coast’s most wooded\, curvaceous\, and beautiful scenery. \nThe MA & PA Railroad was an important part of life in Harford County\, especially for the towns between Baltimore and York. The early morning run from Harford County to Baltimore City carried so much milk that locals called it “The Milky Way.” For the owners of the County’s many canneries\, quarries\, and mines\, the railroad was an essential part of their livelihood. The trains chugged through 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of only 15 – 20 miles per hour because of the route’s many grade changes and curves. At the turn of the twentieth century\, the railroad trip from Baltimore City to Sharon (north of Forest Hill) took about 1 ¾ hours. \nIn addition to mail and all kinds of Harford County products\, the MA & PA also carried people—travelers\, shoppers\, theatergoers\, and relatives. They welcomed the screeching whistles and billowing steam clouds of the MA & PA Railroad as a way to see what lay beyond their hometowns. Like other railroads of the time\, the MA & PA began a slow decline as buses\, trucks\, and Model Ts began to carry people and products between Baltimore and Bel Air on Rt. 1. \nJoin Ma & Pa expert Walt Holloway as he shares his photographs and stories of the heyday of the Ma & Pa.  The fee is $15. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Icy Winters on the Chesapeake – a Virtual Presentation by Author James Foster
DESCRIPTION:Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay’s myriad inlets in summer\, it is hard to imagine that\, come January\, icebreakers may be plowing the waters you cruised in July. When portions of the Great Shellfish Bay iced up\, the flow of commerce was seriously impeded. At the turn of the nineteenth century\, with the center of the new nation’s government establishing its arms\, a frozen Bay meant that the United States’ emergence to a status on par with the world’s foremost nations might be painfully slow. James Foster’s book\, Icy Winters on the Chesapeake\, chronicles the disasters and pitfalls\, large and small\, that come with the coldest of winters. \nLearn more about the harrowing history of the Chesapeake Bay and winter’s impact on our shores at this virtual presentation at 12:30 pm on January 21st. \nAn email containing the event link will be sent in advance of the start time. \nRegistration is now closed.
