SUMMARY:Revolutionary Harford: Colonial Roots of Maryland\, Harford and the Bush Declaration Signers
DESCRIPTION:The second program in March will feature the Revolutionary Harford theme that we began last year. This program will follow up on last year’s anniversary celebration if the signing of the Bush Declaration—on the 251st anniversary of the historic signing of the Declaration. On March 22\, 1775\, 34 men signed the Bush Declaration. The town of Bush was a major colonial town and port. This presentation will focus on the men who signed the Declaration. Presenter Dr. Sandra Wallis will share excerpts from the stories of these courageous men. We will also celebrate the founding of Maryland\, the third English colony in colonial America. There will be two presentation times\, and interested persons are asked to sign up for a time to ensure there is adequate space. \nMembers Free\, Non-members $5 \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Daily Life in Days Gone By: 'Let's Get a Good Night's Sleep."
DESCRIPTION:The museum will reopen on March 8 with the first in a series of programs on daily living in days gone by. The Hays House Museum will open with a unique Historic bedding display curated by the Historical Society of Harford County Textiles Department. Antique and vintage bedding evokes both a real and imagined connection to family—whether ours or one completely unknown to us—and a sincere appreciation and awe of the hands that created these warm coverings. Bedding is common to all of us\, regardless of who we are\, and bedding handed down through generations\, found in shops\, or made by us\, acquires more meaning with each owner. Visit this year’s opening exhibit to learn more about the bedding of our forefathers and view beautiful quilts and bedding from days gone by. The exhibit will remain on display until mid- April. \nMembers – Free\, Non-members $5 \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford - Guest Speaker Walter Holloway
DESCRIPTION:The Ma & Pa Railroad stretched between Baltimore at North Avenue & Howard Streets\, on to Towson\, and through Long Green Valley into Harford County. It ended at Market Street in York\, Pennsylvania. Even by the day’s standards\, it passed through some of the East Coast’s most wooded\, curvaceous\, and beautiful scenery. \nThe Ma & Pa Railroad was an important part of life in Harford County\, especially for the towns between Baltimore and York. The early morning run from Harford County to Baltimore City carried so much milk that locals called it “The Milky Way.” For the owners of the County’s many canneries\, quarries\, and mines\, the railroad was an essential part of their livelihood. The trains chugged through 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of only 15–20 miles per hour because of the route’s many grade changes and curves. At the turn of the twentieth century\, the railroad trip from Baltimore City to Sharon (north of Forest Hill) took about 1 ¾ hours. \nIn addition to mail and a wide range of Harford County products\, the Ma & Pa also carried people—travelers\, shoppers\, theatergoers\, and relatives. They welcomed the screeching whistles and billowing steam clouds of the Ma & Pa Railroad as a way to see what lay beyond their hometowns. Like other railroads of the time\, the Ma & Pa began a slow decline as buses\, trucks\, and Model Ts carried people and products between Baltimore and Bel Air on Rt. 1. \nJoin Ma & Pa expert Walt Holloway as he shares his photographs and stories of the heyday of the Ma & Pa. Registration is available at www.harfordhistory.org. The fee is $15. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:400 Years of History: Joppa Exhibit Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society is excited to announce the opening of a unique exhibit at the Society’s museum\, celebrating 400 years of life in Joppa. The land now known as Joppa provided an ideal location for Native Americans to hunt\, fish\, and cultivate crops. These same qualities brought colonists to the area. In 1661\, John Taylor received a 300-acre land grant from King Charles II. This land later became the town of Joppa. Tradition holds that the name derives from the biblical Jaffa\, meaning “beautiful.” \nOver time\, Joppa served as the county seat of Baltimore\, a major shipyard\, a horse racing mecca\, the home of British spies during the American Revolution\, farms worked by Prisoners of War during World War II\, the present-day residential community of Joppatowne\, and so much more. \nJoin us to view artifacts tracing Joppa’s history and learn about the incredible stories behind this beautiful waterfront community and its role in county history. \nThis is a free event. Donations are appreciated. Parking is available at the rear of the building off Gordon Street. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Living History Lunch & Show: Sarah Grimke Speaks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this year’s Annual Meeting on Sunday\, September 21\, 2025\, at 2 pm. This very special program will feature a delicious lunch provided by one of Harford’s most noted caterers\, an opportunity to browse the ever-expanding museum collection\, and the chance to experience a unique living history performance by historical interpreter Christine Potts as she transports us to the world of Sarah Grimke\, noted abolitionist and suffragist. \nSarah Grimke Speaks! \nWhen 26-year-old Sarah Moore Grimke boarded a ship from Charleston to Philadelphia in 1819 to accompany her ailing father north\, she embarked on a history-making journey that took her from failed Southern belle to pioneering abolitionist and women’s rights activist. \nBorn into the Southern gentry\, Sarah’s abhorrence of slavery and devotion to God led her to convert to Quakerism and settle in Philadelphia\, where her charismatic and irrepressible younger sister Angelina Emily Grimke later joined her. After tumultuous years within the Society of Friends\, Sarah then followed Angelina north to New York\, where the two rose to public prominence and national notoriety by doing the largely unprecedented: daring to speak their minds. \nIn a time when no “respectable woman” would utter a word of public discourse\, the Grimke sisters became among the first women in America to conduct a lecture tour. What began as ladies’ gatherings in private parlors soon grew to packed audiences of men and women held spellbound by the sisters’ calls for immediate abolition of the enslaved and then\, perhaps even more controversially\, equal rights for women. \nIn this 50-minute program\, Chris Potts tells Sarah’s story in Sarah’s voice\, immersing the listener in a compelling vocal performance. With a background in teaching\, writing\, and performative storytelling\, Chris first developed the idea to research the life and interpret the story of Sarah Grimke after leading a discussion on Sue Monk Kidd’s The Invention of Wings in 2019 at the Historical Society of Harford County\, where she now serves as Executive Director. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The Last Raid\, Author Event & Book Signing with Tom Guercio and Diana Guercio Prentice
DESCRIPTION:Step back to the Bel Air of the 1930s and 1940s with authors Thomas Guercio and Diana Guercio Prentice. Learn about the days of the Bel Air Race Track\, the “Graw\,” boxing at the Armory\, poker at the Argonne\, and gambling at “The Hole.” These good old days included bookmaking\, moonshine\, and so much more. \nThe Guercios tell their father’s story through the reminiscences of George Van Bibber\, a friend of the authors’ father. Sam Guercio\, an Italian immigrant\, settled in Bel Air in 1932. Several of his family members were already residents and local business owners. If you are of a certain age\, you may remember visiting Sam’s Barbershop\, the family’s Shoe Repair shop on Burns Alley\, Guercio’s Grocery Store\, or perhaps Sam & Gorrell’s bookmaking parlor in Fallston. Books will be available for purchase.
